Henry Rollins

Derby Assemby Rooms

November 25 1998

Start of the silly season for me. This, two trips to London and the then Sepultura in Nottingham in the next four days. Testing. Need to be in a good mood. And what better way to get in a good mood than sitting through 2 3/4 hours of Rollins spoken word. No, I'm not being sarky, I'm being serious. See, this is so entertaining. Rollins comes across as a seriously intelligent, witty fun kind of guy when he does this. He spins out tales, punctuates them with Bill Hicksesque style, and generally keeps you enthralled.

Tonight sees tales of his meeting Mark E Smith from the Fall, growing up with Ian Mackaye and working in the theatre collecting ticket stubs while Caligula is being shown. His latest film tale, and the nude scene. A Rollins band trip to Singapore, with great voices, and dubious tales of visits to a sex club (yep, he claims to have done it). His move towards middle age (ok, 40), and how he's trying to deal with it (buy a new bed). You can't really describe all this, because it would take at least 2 3/4 hours to do so.

Highlights are possibly the tale of Marilyn Manson at one of the German festivals this year, and his trip with a friend to see the reformed Ratt, at which he met Tom from RATM. Rawwwwwwwk.

Suffice to say, this was one of the best things I've witnessed this year. Doesn't matter if you like the music he plays or not, you should check out his spoken word. It's classic. Some complain that he's covering himself in glory, name dropping and that it just ain't punk. Mannnn. Yeah, maybe, but it's entertaining. He doesn't have to do it, but he chooses to. Don't like it? Then don't go. And let's face it, how many of us have never tried to create some kind of tale out of some of the things that have happened to us, and then tried to relate it to whoever is interested. We all do it. It's just Rollins does it better than most. So what's wrong with that then?

Set me up nicely for the next few days. You coming on the trip? It's going to be tiring.
