Snot

Man am I having problems getting to grips with this one. I know that I should like it, and that I do like it, but it's still bugging me.

A definite hybrid of metal and hardcore, the musical side is great, and at times, suitably diverse, but I think the problem is that where the music varies, the vocals don't. Sounding alot at times like Lou Koller from Sick of it All to me, Lynne Strait sticks to the hardcore shout mode. Which is fine normally, but sometimes gets a little irritating, especially when the music offers the chance of variation. Tracks like Stoopid or Joy Ride, I just think could be sung instead. And that's from someone who likes hardcore shouting normally. It's why I have this I should love it but .... problem.

I Jus' Lie is the standout. Easily. And the viciousness of Mr. Brett (read the lyrics and see if you can't figure that one out). And the selftitled Snot. Mixing it up you get the laidback instrumental of 313. Then you get songs like Stoopid and Joy Ride, The Box, accessible and pretty catchy. The songs are Ok, I dunno, maybe it's just not working as an album for me. Kerrang! style this one is probably a 3 1/2 out of 5 for me.

I'm getting splinters just writing this review, I've sat on the fence so much. I don't know, if you like hardcoresque music, or are a fan of the new metal (I have to stop using that term) scene, then get hold of it. If that sort of stuff does absolutely nothing for you, then, um, probably best leave it alone. Right, I'm going to go listen to it again and try and make up me mind. Great cover though.
