Plexi - Cheer Up.

Ok, this album is a couple of years old, but it’s kinda hard to find in the UK, and I’ve been listening to it a hell of a lot over say the last six months or so, and as a result, I’ve decided to review it. Cos it’s excellent. Brings to mind Girls Against Boys, maybe a hint of Nirvana and it’s got a bit of sleaze sort of thing as well. And there’s a hint of Janes Addiction in the music at the start of the gorgeous Peel. But then you get a track like Mountains, which apart from being superb, reminds me of U2 mixed with a New Order style bass thing. And if that kind of description scares you, well don’t let it. This is highly addictive stuff. Forest Ranger starts it off, a glorious song, semi drawled vocals. It’s sort of sleazy, sort of post grungy, sort of rock sort of not. The chorus to Dayglo sounds like a Pet Shop Boys song merged with GVsB, while Change has a summery feel to it yet is still a dark song.

In spite of the plethora of great songs, my personal favourite is saved for the final track, Star Star. Kind of acoustic thing, you either love it or hate it I guess. Personally I love the song.

That may all make it sound like you need an open mind to listen to this. No, you don’t. You just need to listen to this. Trust me on this one. Even if it wasn’t released in ‘98, this turned into one of my absolute favourite albums of the year.

Available on SubPop, though you may need to look for it on import. I’ve only ever seen it in London.
